What is Osteopenia?
Osteopenia is a condition in which an individual’s bones are weaker than normal, but do not break easily like osteoporosis. It occurs when the body is unable to make a new bone fast enough as old bone reabsorbs.
What are the causes of Osteopenia?
Osteopenia is caused due to certain underlying factors such as:
- Eating disorders
- Positive family history of this osteopenia, genetic disorders
- Decreased levels of hormones such as estrogen or testosterone
- Untreated celiac disease
- An overactive thyroid gland
- Chemotherapy
- Certain medications such as antiepileptics and corticosteroids
- Inappropriate levels of calcium and vitamin D in the body
- Not enough exercise
- Excessive smoking and consumption of alcohol
- Other conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis
