What is Patellofemoral Arthritis?

This condition occurs when the articular cartilage (that is associated along the trochlear groove and on the underside of the patella) wears out and is inflamed. 

What are the causes of Patellofemoral Arthritis?

Causes of patellofemoral arthritis include: 

• Sports: Running or jumping sports may exert repetitive stress on the knee joint, which in turn causes irritation under the kneecap. This stress on the knees can lead to patellofemoral arthritis. 
• Muscle imbalances or weaknesses: Patellofemoral related pain may occur when the muscles surrounding the knees don’t keep the kneecaps aligned. 
• Injury: Any form of injury or trauma to the kneecap, such as a dislocation or fracture, has often been associated with patellofemoral pain syndrome.
• Surgery: Knee surgery increases the risk of patellofemoral pain.
