Dydrogesterone is a synthetic progesterone that acts directly on the uterus and maintains a completely secretory endometrial lining of the uterus. It helps in the healthy growth and shedding of the uterus lining cells by acting directly on the progesterone receptors.
The drug is active orally and absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. The drug does not have any androgenic, estrogenic, corticoid, or anabolic effects. The body excretes dydrogesterone as pregnanediol.
The drug’s primary use is to treat irregularities in menstrual cycles, including the duration, pain, and occurrence. It is also used to treat natural abortion and repeated miscarriages due to progesterone deficiency by making the womb more receptive for the egg implantation.
A potential risk of dydrogesterone intake is Hypospadias. This condition is congenital, where the urethral opening is located on the underside of the penis. However, there is no substantial evidence to support this claim.
Excess consumption of this drug may cause bleeding in-between your periods; take your physician’s advice if this happens. Other minor side effects are abdominal pain, vomiting, breast pain, dizziness, itching, and rashes.
