First Robotic kidney transplantation in Telugu states at Yashoda hospitals
The first three successful robotic kidney transplants in Telugu states was done at Yashoda Hospitals. The complicated kidney transplant surgeries necessitated the use of most advanced methods and equipment. These operations were done in October, at ‘Center for Nephrology & Urology in Yashoda Hospitals, Secunderabad.
The team consisting of Dr. Suri Babu (Urologist), Dr. Urmila Anandh and Dr. Suresh Babu both Nephrologists have conducted two more robotic kidney transplants along with the first ever in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh states. Three of them have totally recovered and leading normal life. In these first three robot-assisted kidney transplant surgeries, women have donated kidneys to their son and husband.
Kidney transplantation is the standard of care for patients with the end-stage renal disease. While open-surgery is being performed for over six decades. Robotic surgery has been recently introduced for the recipient undergoing kidney transplantation. First Robo assisted kidney surgery was done in France, and at present, it is performed in only a few centers like Delhi, Ahmedabad, and Cochin in our country.
Unlike regular surgeries for kidney transplantation where the patient receives the kidney through a larger muscle cutting process, Robotic surgery is conducted with only a small incision and involves no cutting of muscle. The Da Vinci robot system is used in a specific way to ensure vibration-free movement of the instrument thus causing no damage to the graft kidney. This ensures minimal chances of infection and faster recovery of the patient and the donor.

Raju Konga (35), a mobile shop owner from Hyderabad was suffering from Chronic Kidney Disease(CKD) since December 2016, visited a private hospital in the city but could not get ‘satisfactory treatment’. Then he came to Yashoda Hospitals at Secunderabad in May 2017, where he was on regular follow up with Dr Urmila Anandh, Senior Nephrologist. In August, Raju underwent Nephrectomy due to a urinary infection, and since then he was on dialysis for a month. Later in October, Robo assisted Kidney transplantation was performed. This six-hour-long surgery was successful. Currently, both Raju and his donor Mother Mallikamba (70) are doing well.
The very next day the same team of Doctors has performed another Robo assisted kidney transplant on Ajay Kurre(38), A businessman from Bilaspur of Chhattisgarh state who was suffering from CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease) since January 2017.
Initially, he went to a local hospital in Bilaspur and was suggested to undergo a Kidney transplant. His wife Jyothi Kurre(26) was willing to donate her kidney. Ajay came to Secunderabad Yashoda Hospitals in September with swollen hands and legs, and he was not on dialysis. Robot-Assisted Kidney transplant was scheduled and performed in October.
Similarly, A lecturer(40) in a hotel management college at Delhi underwent a robot-assisted kidney transplant, also in the month of October. He was suffering from diabetes, hypertension for more than 5 years which lead to CKD four years back. For the past two years, the lecturer was on dialysis. He came to Yashoda Hospitals with swelling of hands and feet. Keeping in mind his complicated health conditions, the kidney transplant team consisting of Dr. Suri Babu (urologist) and Dr. Suresh Babu, Nephrologist at Yashoda Hospitals suggested robot-assisted surgery and performed it successfully. He and his wife who donated her kidney are doing well now.
“These families were apprised about the latest robotic technology and its benefits, including a lower risk of infection, lesser pain, and a faster return to normalcy. Higher magnification and finer scaled movement of robotic instruments ensured greater precision in this technique,” explained Dr. Suri Babu, the urologist who performed the transplant surgery. He added, that the robotic surgical system eliminates human termer, an essential requirement for performing a good vascular anastomosis. Robotic surgery allows kidney transplantation to be performed with greater precision, minimal blood loss, and a lesser chance of post-operative infection. “This is an advanced procedure performed in very few centres in the world,” said Dr. Suri Babu.
“It has been a privilege for us to perform Telugu states’ first robotic kidney transplant at Yashoda hospitals. We are thrilled that the patient and the donor are doing well and the operation was a great success,” said Dr. Urmila Anandh and Dr. Suresh Babu Nephrologists. The doctors said that the particular robot has been in use previously for other surgeries but was used for the first time for a Kidney transplant.
