In Guillain-Barré syndrome, the body’s immune system attacks the neurological system, causing weakness, loss of reflexes, and numbness or tingling throughout the body. Anyone can experience it and suffer temporary paralysis, although people 50 years of age or older experience it more commonly.
Plasmapheresis, which includes taking blood out of the body, cleaning it, and then putting it back in, can be used to treat this problem. Immunoglobulins, antibodies, and healthy cells may be infused into the patient through an IV to decrease the immune system’s attack on the body.
Some GBS patients need to stay in the hospital for a few days, while others need to stay for several weeks. Until the patient regains full control of his body, the patient needs complete assistance from a nurse or family members like a routine exercise of arms or legs. Physical therapy is recommended by the doctor to increase strength.
The typical duration of GBS is 14 to 30 days. If the symptoms last longer, the patient may have chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, a form of GBS that requires more aggressive treatment.
