Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are abnormal connections between arteries and veins that bypass normal capillary circulation. This can lead to high blood flow, increased pressure and potential damage to nearby tissues.
Radical excision of high flow AV malformations (arteriovenous malformations) is a surgical procedure that involves removing the affected blood vessels to treat abnormal connections between arteries and veins in the body. This is typically achieved through a combination of surgical techniques, such as microsurgical dissection, endovascular embolization, and/or radiation therapy.
The procedure is typically performed under general anaesthesia and requires meticulous dissection and removal of the abnormal vessels. In some cases, the surrounding tissue may also need to be removed to ensure the complete removal of the malformation. After the removal, the healthy vessels are reconnected to restore normal blood flow.
Recovery after AVM surgery varies but generally involves bed rest, pain management, avoiding strenuous activity, and following up with the doctor. Possible complications include bleeding, infection, stroke, and changes in sensation or mobility. It’s important to follow the doctor’s instructions for the best outcome.
