Kidney stones are hard deposits made of minerals and salts that form inside the kidneys and can cause pain and discomfort. They can range in size from a grain of sand to as large as a golf ball.
Ureteroscopy and laser stone fragmentation (URSL) is a treatment procedure used for kidney stones. The procedure involves using a thin, flexible scope called a ureteroscope to visualise and access the stones in the ureter or renal pelvis. Once the stones are located, a laser is used to break them into smaller fragments that can be easily passed out of the body.
Recovery from URSL is generally quick, with patients able to return to normal activities within a few days. Pain management medications are prescribed to alleviate discomfort. It is important to drink plenty of fluids after the procedure to help flush out any remaining fragments and reduce the risk of infection.
