An aneurysm is an abnormal swelling of the wall of a blood vessel. It might happen in the brain, spleen, gut, or back of the knee. It should be brought to medical attention before it ruptures, as the complications are severe and can also be fatal at times.

A bypass procedure is used to direct blood flow away from the aneurysm through other blood veins in the body, allowing the surgeon to safely repair the aneurysm.

To reroute blood flow in the lower leg, a femoral-popliteal bypass is performed. The patient is sedated before the treatment begins. The first one is made close to the groin crease, while the second one is made close to the knee or ankle. The wounds are closed after the graft, a blood vessel extracted from another area of the patient’s body is sewn to the artery on both ends.

The patient will be closely monitored in the hospital for another week. After the procedure, the leg will be sore, but it will eventually get better. In order to recuperate properly, the patient is advised to take a few days off of work and rest. Complete recovery can be expected in 12 weeks.

Mr. Ayanle Mohammed from Somalia, underwent a Surgery for Giant Aneurysm with Bypass, under the supervision of Dr. Devender Singh, Consultant Vascular & Endovascular Surgeon, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad.
