Knee replacement surgery, also known as knee arthroplasty, is a procedure that involves removing the damaged knee joint and replacing it with an artificial joint (prosthesis). This helps to relieve pain and restore function to severely damaged knee joints.
Simultaneous bilateral knee replacement involves replacing both of your knees during the same surgery. Because both knees heal at the same time, the main benefits of this procedure are a shorter hospital stay and a faster recovery.
The majority of knee replacements last for more than 15 years, and they offer pain relief, increased mobility, and a higher quality of life. You can resume most of your daily activities three to six weeks after surgery. However, because knee replacement is a major surgery, it may result in complications such as infections, blood clots, heart attacks, strokes, nerve damage, failure of the artificial joint, and the need for blood transfusions.
