In a first of its kind in Hyderabad, doctors at Yashoda Hospitals have performed bone tumor removal and reconstruction surgery to treat Ewing’s sarcoma i.e. tumor in the bone. Ewing’s sarcoma is a rare tumor that requires special multimodal treatment. At Yashoda Hospitals, the procedure involved surgical removal of the tumor with intraoperative frozen sections, extracorporeal irradiation (ECI) of the tumor i.e. use of high-dose radiation on the removed bone, and its replacement in the body as an autologous implant. A particular innovation during the procedure was the use of rice bags during ECI instead of sterile water (which is conventional) since the latter can increase the rate of infection to as high as 40%. The procedure was collaboratively done by Dr. Sachin Marda, consultant surgical oncology and robotic surgery and Dr. Sunil Dachepalli, consultant orthopedic joint replacement and arthroscopic surgery. The patient, Mikhail Andreichenka, a 6-year old boy from Kazakhstan has been treated successfully and expected to walk soon. His mother says: “Dr. Sachin Marda and his team have handled the surgery well and completed it successfully. I am very grateful to all of them.”
