Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a rare and serious disorder that can cause blood clots to form in small blood vessels throughout the body. This can lead to a reduction in the number of platelets in the blood (thrombocytopenia).
Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is a medical treatment used to remove harmful substances from the blood of patients with TTP.
The procedure involves removing a portion of the patient’s blood and replacing it with fresh plasma or plasma substitute. The patient’s blood is passed through a special machine called a cell separator, which removes the plasma (the liquid portion of the blood) and returns the blood cells to the patient. The removed plasma is then replaced with either fresh plasma from a blood donation or a plasma substitute.
The recovery time for TPE will vary depending on the patient’s condition and overall health. After the procedure, the patient’s platelet count will be closely monitored, and they will be instructed to avoid activities that could cause bleeding or injury.
