Breast cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the breast tissue. It is the most common type of cancer in women worldwide, and it can also occur in men, though it is uncommon. Symptoms may include a lump in the breast, changes in breast size or shape, nipple discharge, redness of the breast skin, and breast pain. However, most breast cancers remain asymptomatic, so regular screening is critical for early detection.
Breast cancer is diagnosed through a combination of physical examination, imaging tests such as mammography, ultrasound, or MRI, and a biopsy. Treatment for breast cancer is determined by the stage of the cancer, its size and location, the type of cancer, and the patient’s overall health.
Treatment options for breast cancer include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and targeted therapy, and the treatment plan may include one or more of these treatments. The most common treatment for breast cancer is surgery, which involves the removal of cancerous tissue. The two main types of breast cancer surgery are lumpectomy (removal of the tumour and surrounding tissue) and mastectomy (removal of the entire breast).
