Failed back syndrome (FBS), also known as post-laminectomy syndrome, is a condition characterised by persistent pain in the back and legs after a patient has undergone back surgery.
Revision spine surgery is a complex procedure that is performed to correct a previous failed back surgery or address new spinal problems that have developed.
The doctor does a preoperative evaluation to determine the cause of failed surgery. Anesthesia (general or regional) is given. Then he makes an incision and removes hardware causing pain, realigns the spinal column and removes scar tissue or bone spurs. The incision is then closed.
The recovery process involves a hospital stay, pain management, physical therapy, return to normal activities, and follow-up care. The recovery process can be lengthy but most patients see significant improvement in symptoms and quality of life after the procedure.
