A meningioma is a type of tumour that develops from the meninges, which are the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord. The majority of meningioma tumours grow slowly, often for many years without causing symptoms. However, their effects on nearby brain tissue, nerves, or vessels can result in serious disability.
A sphenoid wing meningioma is a benign brain tumour located near the sphenoid bone at the base of the skull, behind the eyes. They account for about 20% of meningiomas and frequently cause proptosis (the bulging of one or both of your eyes from their normal position) and cavernous sinus syndrome.
Sphenoid wing meningiomas are diagnosed through a combination of physical exam and neuroimaging via MRI or CT. The primary treatment option for symptomatic meningiomas is surgical resection, which is the surgical removal of a tumour. The extent of resection has a significant impact on recurrence rates for surgically treated meningiomas of all grades.
Surgery to remove a meningioma, either partially or completely, is a complex procedure that can result in complications such as swelling and fluid buildup around your brain, injury to cranial nerves, and accidental damage to normal brain tissue.
Mrs. Fatimah Ali Nur from Somalia successfully received treatment for Medial Sphenoid Wing Meningioma at Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, under the supervision of Dr. Rajasekhar Reddy K, Sr. Consultant Neuro & Spine Surgeon.
