The pelvic floor, also known as the pelvic diaphragm, supports the viscera of the abdomen and pelvis, ensures bowel and bladder continence, and performs voiding, defecating, sexual, and birthing functions. The pelvic floor contains the pelvic floor muscles (PFM), which include superficial muscles as well as the deep levator ani muscles.
Pelvic floor dysfunction can result from weak, strained, or extremely tight pelvic floor muscles, which can cause pelvic pain, urinary or bowel incontinence, pain during sex, sexual dysfunction, and pelvic organ prolapse.
Pelvic floor physiotherapy aims to increase pelvic floor function through exercises, dietary changes, education, and practical learning therapy to reduce and get rid of the symptoms. In this therapy, a set of muscles involved in bowel, sexual, and urine function are examined and treated using various stretching methods, medications, and relaxation techniques.
