A lumbar herniated disc is a condition in which the soft centre of a spinal disc in the lower back protrudes through a tear in the outer ring of the disc. This can cause a variety of symptoms, ranging from mild to severe, depending on the location and size of the herniation.
One Level Percutaneous Endoscopic Lumbar Discectomy (PELD) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to treat lumbar (lower back) herniated discs. The procedure is performed under general or regional anaesthesia and typically takes 1-2 hours to complete. The patient lies on their stomach, and a small incision is made in the lower back. The endoscope is inserted through the incision, allowing the surgeon to view the affected area and remove the herniated portion of the disc.
Patients are typically able to return home the same day and can resume normal activities within a few days. However, physical therapy and rehabilitation may be required to regain full strength and mobility.
Mrs. Habibo Al Jimali from Somalia, underwent One Level Percutaneous Endoscopic Lumbar Discectomy, under the supervision of Dr. Bala Raja Sekhar Chandra Yetukuri, Sr. Consultant Neuro & Spine Surgeon, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad.
