Vertebroplasty is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat painful compression fractures of the vertebrae, often caused by osteoporosis or other conditions that weaken the bones. During the procedure, medical-grade cement is injected into the fractured vertebra to fill the fractured area and relieve pain.
The procedure is performed under anaesthesia with the aid of continuous X-ray guidance to ensure that the needle is inserted in the right place in the fractured area. The cement is then injected into the vertebra through the needle, filling the spaces created by the fracture. The patient will be advised to lie on their back for an hour until the cement sets and will be kept under observation for 2-3 hours before they are discharged.
Vertebroplasty is a safe and effective procedure that can be performed as an outpatient procedure. Most patients experience significant pain relief within a few days. However, as with any medical procedure, there are risks associated with vertebroplasty, including bleeding, infection, and nerve damage.
Mrs. M. Varalakshmi from West Godavari successfully underwent Vertebroplasty for Compression Fracture at Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, under the supervision of Dr. Rajasekhar Reddy K, Sr. Consultant Neuro & Spine Surgeon.
