Spine surgery is an open procedure used to repair disorders of the spine that cause pain and numbness in the arms or legs. Spine surgeries can be of several types depending on the patient’s ailment, such as spinal fusion, laminectomy, foraminotomy, diskectomy, disc replacement, and interlaminar implant.
In procedures such as lumbar decompression and spinal fusion, the surgeon begins by making a small incision and introducing a tubular retractor through the skin and soft tissues down the spinal column, creating a tunnel to the damaged location in the spine. The surgeon places the required devices, such as screws or rods, through the retractor. Throughout the process, fluoroscopy (the display of real-time X-ray pictures of the patient’s spine on screen) is used to guide the surgeon. The required action is completed ( either fusion or decompression of the spine). When the tubular retractor is taken out, the muscles settle back into place. The surgery is then ended by sealing the incision. Following the procedure, the patient is kept under observation in the hospital for 5 days, not to engage in any rigorous activity and not to miss any follow-up appointments. In 4 to 6 weeks after surgery, the patient can begin performing the basic daily tasks. It may take another 3 to 4 months to fully recover.
