Debulking cytoreductive surgery is a common ovarian cancer treatment procedure that helps to remove as much cancerous tissue in the patient’s abdomen as possible while leaving no tumour nodules larger than 1 centimetre in diameter behind.
This procedure is especially important for patients whose cancer has spread throughout their abdomen, and it has the potential to improve patient survival rates. A gynecologic oncologist should perform this procedure because they are specially trained in providing medical care for gynecological cancers.
A microscope is used to examine the organs and tissues removed during debulking cytoreductive surgery to determine whether additional ovarian cancer surgery or other treatments are needed, and also to learn more about cancer itself.
