A lipoma is one of the most common types of soft tissue tumours, which are usually slow-growing, non-cancerous masses that are typically found just below the skin. While most lipomas are benign and do not cause significant health issues, surgical removal may be necessary if they cause symptoms or pose a risk to the baby’s well-being.
The procedure involves a preoperative evaluation to locate the lipoma and assess its relationship to surrounding structures. General anaesthesia is administered, followed by a small incision to access the lipoma. The surgeon carefully removes the lipoma while minimising damage to nearby tissues. If a dural defect is present, it is repaired to prevent complications. The incision is closed using sutures or staples, and a sterile dressing is applied.
Babies are monitored closely in a hospital setting following the surgery. Pain medications may be administered to manage any discomfort, and antibiotics may be prescribed to prevent infection. The length of the hospital stay will depend on the baby’s overall health and the complexity of the surgery.
