Uterine fibroids, which are also known as leiomyomas, are benign growths that occur in the uterus. They can form as a single nodule or in clusters, and their sizes can range from 1 mm to over 20 cm. While smaller fibroids are generally asymptomatic and do not require treatment, larger ones can cause a range of symptoms, including heavy menstrual bleeding, frequent urination, pain during sexual intercourse, lower back pain, and constipation.
Robotic myomectomy is a minimally invasive procedure used to remove uterine fibroids that are within the uterine wall (intramural) or outside of the uterus (subserosal). This procedure is performed under general anaesthesia and is usually done on an outpatient basis. The surgeon makes several small cuts (incisions) in the abdomen to remove the fibroids.
When compared to open surgery, robotic myomectomy results in less blood loss, fewer complications, a shorter hospital stay, and a faster return to regular activities. However, as with any other surgery, it may cause risks such as excessive blood loss and infections.
Mrs. Rashmi Jain from Hyderabad successfully underwent Robotic-Assisted Myomectomy at Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, under the supervision of Dr. Anitha Kunnaiah, Senior Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, Laparoscopic & Robotic Surgeon, and Infertility Specialist.
