Vasculitis is an inflammation of the blood vessels in the body that can affect either very small blood vessels (capillaries) or large blood vessels such as the aorta (the main artery that transports oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the rest of the body). The exact cause is unknown; however, an impaired immune system is thought to play a significant role.
Common signs and symptoms include skin rashes, weakness, fatigue, fever, joint pains, abdominal pain, kidney problems, nerve problems, coughing, and/or shortness of breath. The diagnosis is made using a comprehensive physical examination, the patient’s medical history, current symptoms, and the outcomes of specialized tests like blood tests, imaging tests, angiography (blood vessel X-rays), and biopsies.
The treatment aims to reduce inflammation as well as treat any underlying conditions that may be causing the vasculitis. It may include anti-inflammatory medications such as corticosteroids. Surgery may be required to treat complications associated with vasculitis, such as aneurysms (an abnormal bulge in the blood vessel wall), and to restore blood flow in the case of blocked arteries.
